Wheeler’s Diner, Route 74 Truckstop – Glasgow.

The Route 74 Truckstop is clearly signposted from either direction on the M74 and has a free carpark. ‘Everyone Welcome’ it says by the door just in case you suffer from semiochodriverphobia. A word I have just repurposed. I think you can work it out.

Wheeler’s Diner is usefully open from 6AM. Outside, Wheeler’s is a brand new, shiny, squeaky-clean plastic building. Inside, Wheeler’s is a brand new, shiny, squeaky-clean plastic building. There is a huge, gleaming toilet block. All is anonymous and calm, a bit like a major hospital café on a quiet Thursday afternoon. It’s spacious inside and the few customers are sparsely distributed. A few solo truck drivers, two formidable women with a horsebox and an older couple who sit facing each other. He watches Sky News on the giant wall-mounted screen immediately above her head. She looks down at her phone, captivated. They are apparently ignoring each other but it seems calm and companionable, just like the staff and service.

Straight café food, but done well and fresh, no annoyances and general efficiency give Wheeler’s the ambience of a better motorway service station. Prices are very reasonable. The coffee is only standard but that is better than Costa and certainly better that Starbucks.

Wheeler’s: it’s functional and there’s no reason not to stop here to refuel yourself. Try it, you have nothing to fear. You are welcome.

The older couple have finished their meal. They edge down the ramp to their Honda Jazz. He holds her arm so she doesn’t slip in the slushy snow. They smile at each other.  He lights up a fag and they share it, savouring everything. Refueled.
