The exterior signage on the Duke reads, ’Breakfast to bed time. Running all day long.’ That, my PMiaV chums is what we are doing all day long in our vans. But pause, consider, what are we really doing, where are we really going?
I can now specifically suggest it should be John Finnie St, Kilmarnock. Park on Grange Place and pay. It’s worth it. Visit the Duke. All aboard!
I had an intuition there might be PMiaV-EOI (PickyManinaVanEstablishmentOfInterest) nearby as I knew there was a take-out branch of Tempura (see previous episodes) on John Finnie St. I would hazard a guess that the Tempura team are behind the Duke.
Here are all the things I like about the Duke; a maximalist, superbly over-filled interior stuffed with décor bits, basket lighting gone mad. A monster green banquette. A great and well-hung display of tasteful and interesting art. A high ceiling, big windows and a pleasing range of spaces, seating and tables. Good music. An innovative all-day menu of great brasserie style food, including tempura dishes, that came fast. Smiley, efficient service. Very reasonable prices and no rush or pressure whatsoever. Excellent coffee in a nice blue cup and saucer. Yes, the same full-on French roast Tempura use. Case closed, it must be the same team.
The Duke is utterly welcoming, comfortable and relaxing whatever you want; coffee, food or drink all day and night. Breakfast to bed time.
Here’s what I don’t like about the Duke: I had to leave. But where was I really going?
