Melo, Bearsden, Glasgow

Achilles may have been the greatest and swiftest of the Greeks but there was the eventually defining matter of his heel. I feel the same about the coffee in Melo.

Melo is conveniently located on A81 Milngavie Road. Opposite is a rank of free parking in MacFarlane Rd and nearby is the tasty, filling and reasonably priced diesel of ASDA, frugal PMiVs. There is the additional bonus of a good charity shop next door, filled with the high-end discarded pickings of the Bearsdensians. Stop chortling about my new cardigan. It’s very warm and oatmeal goes with everything.

I took a seat at the well-designed window bench and admired the pleasingly leathery little seats. It is a smidgeon noisy inside with a blare-y radio but the interior is practical enough, if not loaded with character apart from some unusual camouflage paint touches. The staff are charming and apparently raring to serve.

Melo is a relaxing spot to glance up from your phone and savour the stationary traffic at the lights, assuring yourself that one does indeed have time for a luncheon that is not al van-o. The coffee came fast, so fast, but its vapour trails were then scattered by a halloumi burger, fries and salad which arrived so promptly I felt like I had faced a Djokovic serve. I reckon I could have jumped out of the van whilst the lights were red, ordered it, been served and be back in the van by amber.

Said burger, fries etc were pretty good but the coffee was not. Like a Tennessee Williams lead character it was too hot, weak and lacking in backbone. Otherwise Melo is a practical, inexpensive and decent place to refuel. If you are on a tight schedule the speed of the operation is more like an F1 tyre change than a café.

My search for a truly satisfactory establishment for our PMiaV needs in the annointed suburb of Bearsden will continue. This El Dorado must exist, surely.
